Renovate/replace old stone fireplace
Comments (7)Hi Matthew, Do you still need some advice? The fireplace on it's own isn't bad, however, It doesn't go very well with the décor of the space. I agree with the previous comments, I would get rid of the wallpaper, either paint over it or use wallpaper again, however using light colours, such as; light grey or white. This would definitely look better as it will allow the fireplace to stand out, unlike now, it's competing with the wallpaper too much. In terms of the Fireplace, I would advice to use either stones or bricks, using neutral colours. This will look great in your space. An idea is in the photo....See MoreLooking for paint ideas to brighten up large, dark hall
Comments (5)Wow, that hall is bigger than most of my rooms! LOL! I presume there is no possibility for a sun tunnel to add natural light in the hall? Any eaves above it anywhere? Another trick was to have panels above internal doors made in glass so that the light from the rooms would bounce back into the hallway. I'm always of the belief that if you don't have the light then don't fight it. ie even with light reflective white walls you may still feel it's dark and dingy so I would try and make it feel cosy and inviting by using richer colours perhaps on lower walls with some off white contrasts and add lots of mirrors where you can that will reflect back any light in the room. Also make sure the artificial lights are abundant and bright as something simple as upping a lightbulb wattage (or adding a multi-bulb sparkly chandelier) would make a huge difference...See MoreRenovation Renovating a kitchen with difficult layout
Comments (8)Hi Ingrid, I really like the way it looks. Not sure if it's the wood panelling in the kitchen or the cosiness of living room. However, I'm guessing the house is old, and given all the blankets in the living room, you mum sitting in doors with a jumper on, the log burner, and electric radiator I'm going to assume it gets very cold in there! So I would reconsider going open plan. I think, unless you have a healthy budget for thermal upgrades, the log burner will struggle to heat the bigger space and electric heating will work out expensive. I would instead just replace the pocket doors with bigger ones so that your mum can have them open in warmer weather and close off the living room in colder weather. I would flip the kitchen door so that it opens into the entrance or replace it with a pocket door. Then I would swap the dining area over with the sink area, by raising the window ledge slightly, giving you mum a much more efficient L shaped kitchen. The fridge I would bring round to the pocket wall door and I would put the sink under which ever of the two windows has the better views. I think this layout would allow your mum to have a nice open plan kitchen/diner/living area in warmer weather and keep the cosy living room in colder weather. It would be achievable quite easily on a modest budget....See MoreRenovation of Conservatory/Sun room
Comments (16)Thanks Jonathan So for me it will be Essential 1) Strip the whole house down 2) Then rewiring 3) Heating, radiators and combi boiler 4) Replace conservatory roof, with a better, all year round roof 5) Take down the wall between the kitchen and diner, to create an open diner. Insert a RSJ in place of the original wall 6) New kitchen, designed and provided by Wren ( yes I know, loads of negative comments) with 0% finance and a promise of 20 years guarantee from Wren, to repair/replace any damages. From all my google searches, it seems that a kitchen depends more on the fitter than the material used. A great fitter would even make Wren look good! 7) Skirting and internal doors. 8) New flooring all through the property, carpets in lounge and bedrooms 8) Decoration and painting ------------------------------------ Non essential or second round, if I am still standing!! a) Utility room b) Bathroom c) Upgrade conservatory, windows etc Seems like a plan?...See MoreMo Reene
