Need help in designing a kitchen which is in front of house
Comments (27)Thank you for all your comments. The alcove with the lamp is 3'10" h x 3'2" w x 18" deep. The width of wall between door hinges and corner of wall is nearly 2 feet. Actually 60cms. I don't think I will be allowed a range oven in the fireplace recess. People like to put their Aga in such a place and it is practical but I do like my oven and it is very efficient even though I have to get my son sometimes to sort out the technology. It is quite new. I had thought of having the hob across the corner of my "L" shaped layout with an decent extractor fan above which could access through the ceiling to a roof space. One of many roof spaces in my house. However, I have seen a lovely corner pantry in one of the Houzz photos which I am very taken with. It is somewhere I can hang or store saucepans, keep tins of things which I can see easily (i.e.keep a check on storage dates!) and don't get lost in the back of cupboards. The hob would have to go to the left of that. A tall fridge freezer could go to the right. The extractor could still access through the ceiling as it would do a right turn and go up from inside the pantry. Don't know how this corner pantry would look though!? On that fireplace wall the fireplace and mantle will, I'm sorry, have to stay. It needs renovating but that's it. Bytheway, the pantry I describe could have glass in the doors which would lighten the whole thing up and have interesting lighting. A fridge/freezer is a good idea because at the moment I have to make quite a trek to my "back kitchen" where I keep two freezers (full) and it would be handy to have the odd loaf of bread, ice cream, chips and peas nearby. I keep all veg in the back kitchen as well as it is cooler. I do like the light from the windows falling on the area where the sink and draining board now is. Dishwasher is near there. Then it is shady in the corner to the right of the oven where I boil water, store coffee pots, keep tea etc. in cupboard above. Cups, plates above sink. It is all a good working layout. Tins of stuff like tomatoes etc. are in the cupboard under the alcove work top. I'd like to get rid of all that. If I did cause a disturbance and dig out the rest of the stone I could have a good cupboard!! It would take a lot of working on my husband for him to agree to that. But, who knows. I could try. Everything would be easier to get at. Then a hob across the corner. I want to get rid of the need for those trays that angle around and do their best to utilise the corner. I got rid of my last lot as can be seen next to my fridge. I saw a way of doing that by putting a cupboard across the corner and carrying on either side with a work top. The fireplace wall needs sorting out I agree. The trouble is that the glass door opens against that wall which is correct. As I mention above there is 2' of wall behind where the door opens. Shifting the door would cause problems in the adjoining room as there is a long radiator fixed on the wall and would not look right in that room. Not really room for window seats. Window on left has a radiator and worktop or oven fits into wall beside the window. Many thanks for your plan. Comments (39)Hello Becki, So here is a shot of said board over the sink. It's not perfect as I didn't plan it to start with.... Ideally it would need a lip at the back so it doesn't dip. There are various ways of mounting the sink.. so depending on how you do this affects how you can situate a board over the top.. Front is fine as it slides and sits on the front of the sink.. I usually sit the board next to the hob as I put pans and things on it which is useful... With any other offcuts.. I made these into chopping boards.. cut to size rounded off the edges with sander. I stack them all 1 in front of each other.. Really useful way of using anything that might be going to waste... It doesn't have a sheen as it is not treated... I don't oil my chopping boards but wash and dry quickly.. Vegge oil could be wiped over with a cloth if you want to... : ))...See MoreDesign help and ideas....

Your budget is healthy for the project and a creative expert could help optimise this. You will find a large saving utilising an interior designer on this project, not only do you get the trade discounts passed on but you also benefit from a wealth of contacts in contractors and suppliers. An architect and an interior designer can work together on the job, making the project simple and fun for you. Interior designers can coordinate the architect and vice versa. Comments (8)Hi Kate, just personal opinion but I prefer the straight pantry. The main run with the corner pantry doesn’t feel balanced with the size of the island and leaves little worktop space for kettle, toaster etc and not (personally) keen on the island shape. I remember this Houzz tour which is very similar to your corner layout, I wasn’t keen but a lot of people seemed to like it so I may be the outsider! I do wonder if a sliding door would be better on the straight pantry, where the door opens would leave you room for recycling etc on the floor. What is the unit between the radiators? Just wonder if it’s better centred to the window as or aligned with the island? Will there be heating in the dogs room? what will the storage in the island be used for as the island is pretty deep and not so accessible behind stools? I’d also be a bit wary of hot oil splashes from the hob. I also prefer the larger utility with the straight pantry. Would a door outside not work In this plan? I personally don’t dry clothes outside other than in warm months, so just wondering if there’s heating planned for in here and potentially a sliding door could work well here too (just thinking of fighting with the clothes drier as you open the door!) 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI appreciate all the comments. Attached is a floor plan showing how the pantry/office works with the rooms around it. Currently I only have 1 door into the space, but I've been told there is room to add a 2nd door under the stairs. (We are still framing the house, so I can still make some changes.) Of course if I add a door under the stairs, I'll need find another spot for the mudroom "drop zone".
Alternately, you might just be better served adding storage cabinets to the "study" and use them for whatever you choose without actually dividing the room.
I've considered this and like the idea that it is flexible and can change cabinets uses as our needs change. One hesitation is that my husband will mix & match office/pantry supplies and it will drive me crazy! I'd also like to have an "open door" policy on my pantry for family/friends and don't want to worry about someone seeing financial documents on the desk if they go in the pantry for crackers.
I for one don’t like WIP I think they are a waste of space, rarely as functional as you think I.love a wall of pullout pantries 100% better. If you have an island you can use your laptop for paying bills and meal planning . I have a TV in my kitchen where I am hooked to the internet and can look up recipes on a nice big screen
Interesting. I still need the WIP for the full size freezer and under counter wine fridge & bulk storage. (A lot of our pantry space will be for storing things we buy in bulk...water, paper towels, etc.) Would it make sense to just put a pullout pantry for the non-bulk food in the WIP? That would probably cost more since it is cabinets vs shelving, but I'm willing to spend more if it helps with organization. Using the island for laptop/bill paying will not work in my house. It would end up living there. Love your idea of the TV for recipes!
I'd recommend focusing on what you want/need to store in the area, and then you can design the storage to accommodate that.
Thanks for the tips. I'll also note, that we are going to wait to put shelving/cabinets in the pantry until after we move into the house. This will allow us to put extra $ on the kitchen cabinets now and try to get a better "feel" for how we will actually use the pantry space before we invest in cabinets/shelves. I do however want to get a good plan together in case we need to add a wall or door to separate the spaces.
(BTW, there will be a prep sink in the island that is not shown. Any cabinets shown were drawn by the drafter and are not our final cabinet design.)
