Sliding patio door threshold

Level access or a step down onto the patio? We are planning to have a porcelain tiled interior and a stone paver patio. So, the big question is which way to go that will look good and be weather proof against lashing rain.

Although a flush threshold should be entirely possible, if you are looking for the most weatherproof system then a step will obviously give you greater protection, particularly in an exposed location. If you are not going to run the same flooring through to the patio, then arguably it is less of an issue anyway.... best of luck!

Thanks very much for your advice. The site will be exposed to prevailing winds and rain and so I think a step down arrangement is the only snug option.

After going through the same dilemma, we are so happy we went with bifolds. They open out the whole space whereas sliding doors still leave you with some glass (a doors width). Well worth the extra money. Of course if you only have a small opening then perhaps double opening french doors would be better than sliding doors.

The reason that you're dad is telling you this is because of the sizes of the doors. Each door will be less than 3ft wide, and ordinary sliding doors do not slide back completely behind the other, therefore, the gap that you walk through to get outside will be impeeded, probably by around 10-12 inches. When you take into consideration the width of the frame on both sides, your gap will be tiny, i'm hazzarding a guess at somewhere in the realm of 20-24 inches. Of course it is possible, you can have them whatever size you like. Just ask the window company what gap you'll be left with to walk through ! Other sliding doors ( the expensive ones ) - push out then slide over, making your gap larger. If you can afford it, then bi-folds will work, other than that two lovely large patio doors that open out mounted toward the outer edge of the building so that they fold as flat a possible agains the outside walls. We put these on one of our builds, and it's fabulously light and airy inside and the doors open a long way out and back These are the sort that you mean, and we have put them on builds, but you end up having to turn slightly sideways to go through them because of the diminished gap!

I think you will find some of the bespoke glazing option will exceed the cost of making the opening bigger. I would expect the labour for a wider opening, plus installation of off the shelf doors, plus making good plus council fees to be around £3k. If that is within your budget I would do that.

Hi Houzzers We're planning a full width extension to the back of our house. This side faces west and gets very hot. Does anyone have large sliders (our gap will be 4m and looking to have only 3 doors) but with integral blinds? Looking for supplier in West Midlands UK.
