Design Dilemma Exteriors Gardens

Patchy paintwork exterior house wall

Hello! We have renovated our house and knocked down a crumbly wooden lean to from the exterior of the house. The previous owners painted the wall in various places. We have had limited success in trying to remove the paint. Should we brave painting some or all of the wall? any ideas welcome! Many thanks!

I would avoid painting the bricks if at all possible.

Don’t think it will provide a finished, professional look, particularly because there seems no clear boundary with your neighbour’s house.

Hope you’ll get some advice as to how to get the bricks properly cleaned.

Btw, good to see your family member‘s still smiling in these bizarre times...

I agree with ED. Once you've painted it'll be difficult to go back.

You could try brick acid. That removes pretty much everything from brick.

Hi, If you use an iPad you could download the free Dulux Visualizer app to look at different colours - it's quick and easy (but lighting conditions have to be good) For a cost effective transformation I would have to agree with you and most of the comments by painting the Front door, garage doors and windows of the house. (Use a good primer/undercoat like Zinsser external - shellac or oil based) I would advise all matching colours for a uniform country home feel. The olive green or light green looks nice. For the driveway you could go resin bound which is available in a variety of colours now and lasts much longer than Tarmac with far greater osmosis. Again adding the private home country estate feel at a reasonable price. Rendering comes in various colours (although it is costly) if within your budget will totally transform the look and feel adding to the thermal insulation. And most definitely some easy care, low maintenance plants and planters... You don't have to spend mega bucks! Although probably a good time for discounted evergreens? Good luck Edward eDECO

The front of your home is lovely. Don't make any drastic changes like painting brick or rendering the entire facade. Instead, look at the front gardens of other homes in your area and study books on domestic landscaping for ideas. The picket fence, although very sweet, is not contemporary. If you want fencing, consider more sophisticated styles. Alternatively, planting a hedge in box or copper beech would give a sharp edge to the property and you can soften the frontage by growing an evergreen climber like clematis or honeysuckle. Additional box balls and pyramids in a partarre bed with herbaceous planting inside gives year round greenery and colour in the summer. Discuss the drive with your neighbour and consider a drive of pavers that will allow water to seep between instead of running off into the road. Hi Ryan Absolutely love the exterior of your house, i've done a design i hope you like it. I have gone with a touch of modern but also in keeping with the original features and style and history of the house. I've gone for a more Georgian/Tudor door for you in black which i think accentuates the black tiling. You could just paint the door you have and add some DIY stained glass for the pannelling. Adding some lantern wall lights are a great idea to illuminate your entrance space in a safe and also decorative way. Think about adding Drive over lighting around your graveled area to help with parking. I think you should keep the white and exposed brick, maybe just a clean up with a power jet and then a paint should do the trick. I really think you should keep the black features, it adds contrast, so I've kept this in and chosen black outdoor lighting to compliment this. For the garden area I've chosen an alpine and topiary style, alpine succulents and cacti are really in at the moment so if you're wanting a more modern front then definitely go with alpine. Plus you can find some alpine succulents that have a hint of red in them which will compliment the red brick. You could also get some spike lights too, stick them amongst the plants to create a feature. Yes minipie, that's precisely the concern, the walls are still drying out to this date in some areas. It is the intention to tank the bathroom, but this is a small area in a not so risky spot having only one short exterior wall. It will have both a radiator and towel radiator and extra vents whether it gets a warm floor to boot or not .... but this isnt my concern, the other nearly 65 square meters of matching floor covering, and the sheer cost of it is! I dont mind rustic, but the use of cork or lino concerns me in terms of being hard wearing enough, and clay tile sounds pricey but I shall have a look at that. I looked at Hessian, sisal... but Ive never lived with those types of floor. I've seen some say theyre hard to get stains out and I'm concerned that it would latch onto husky hair. This looks alright: http://www.corkfloor.co.uk/floor/GNVICELAND.aspx , nearly £4k (+++) without fitting or the accessories though. But it's "VinylCork" ... that's still coated and looks the same problem as LVT?! http://www.corkfloor.co.uk/floor/GNCCLSWHITE.aspx at a start of just under 2.5K (+++), which would do the job. ... but this also poses the question regarding it's "weartop" coating which is the thing that makes it any use at all for the durability I am looking for... I'm lost... I honestly cant live another 3 years with bare cold floors that look an absolute mess :( At this point, I'll whack £2.99 carpet in and sell the place

Thank you guys! I guess we thought we could paint to where you can see a visible difference between the weathered and protected bricks. And then perhaps put trellises over it all. But I must admit we are really reluctant to do it! I think you are right, I will try some more industrial strength brick acid.

No expert, but I think some caution with acid is probably called for.

It’s likely to be quite an aggressive compound and bricks are quite porous.

Perhaps some more research first is a good idea, so you get the appropriate stuff.

Yes. try it in a less visible area first.

I've used it before and it does actually clean the bricks a bit too well. It can make the rest of the bricks look dirty!
