How big is a 6m open plan space ?

Hi All,

We are in the process of getting a 6m by 7.3m rear extension . the foundations are laid and for some reason the space doesnt look as big as we had thought !!!!

Just to get an idea of the space and what can fit in , can anyone share their thougts about a 6m space and also if possible share some pics of your extended space ( especially kitchen) ???

My kitchen is 6.4 X 5.1 m. We have a straight run kitchen with island with 3 stools. 2m dining table and 2 small armchairs. Our utility is not in kitchen. Your space is a bit bigger so you might get a small sofa instead of armchairs.

We are planning an open plan kitchen extension, however we find it difficult to design the lighting for the room as it is quite big and consists of 3 separate zones (kitchen, living room & dinning room). I attach a diagram to demonstrate the issue: We are not keen in filling the ceiling with spotlights other than the kitchen area to provide the necessary light. We are keen in having nice hanging lights above the island but other than that we do not know how/where to light the rest of the room. Thank you in anticipation.

Hi all, Thank you for your comments; I appreciate them! Natasha - the units you have suggested are very much what I had in mind. We will have a shaker kitchen and the media unit would also be shaker style and would have 4-6 cupboards with the TV in the middle with book shelves either side. Part of the reason we kept a partial wall was to make the space more usable. I can’t envision how the fully open plan room will be able to meet all our needs, but I am open to ideas! I feel that open plan would be more impressive, but potentially less usable. With regards to the doors. I do plan to reverse the doors both into the kitchen and family room part, but couldn’t work out how to do it on the app I used for the floor plan. It is a 1920s house and we have the original doors which we are planning to keep. We are also keeping a lot of floor space as when the table is not extended, we still have young children with lots of Lego and trains etc. I plan for these to be hidden in the cupboards at bedtime. J - we haven’t installed the kitchen but we have ordered it and paid a big deposit. Some of the units are bespoke/irregular sizes and I don’t think we would be willing to change this. I’m no good at drawing floorplans but womdered if this would work: - Keep the island but turn it 90 degrees to face the garden. You will probably need to drop to 2 bar stools - Shorten the kitchen run with the sink and hob on it. One of those may need to go on the island - Dining table goes in front of the doors to the garden, parallel to the island and to the doors - then in the space in between your island and your dining table, basically under the big steel, you put a small sofa on the kitchen side of the room and a tv on the opposite wall. Yes it’s a walk way but this is not your main tv watching area, it’s just for the kids while you prep lunch etc.

Hi Adrian . I’m just on a coffee break - but saw your post - if you have a three story building ( or more) then you need to protect your stairway so that would stop you opening into the hallway. So the only opening up part you could do is the wall between kitchen and lounge. There are designers ( like us ) who do this kind of work with clients -getting designs right to suit you .
