Roof Lantern - Steel Beams and Goal Post Needed?

Hi All, I am wondering if you can help me.

We have had our structural calculations back for our project and the suggestion has been for the flat roof exestension to have steel and a goal post over our back doors to support a 3.2 x 1.8 lantern as per the image below.

This is a lot of steel which is pushing our budget out so trying to find ways to reduce the amound of steel. The suggestions have been

1) Move to flat 4 roof lights which will remove the need for all of that steel and goal post at the back of the house.

2) Make the door smaller so that the steels holding up the roof light can rest on brick.

we really dont want to make the doors smaller and really want to stay with the roof lantern if possible so just wanted to check if in past experince people have seen steel used to hold up roof lanterns or have doubled/tripled up timbers been enough? I have checked the spec sheet and the weight is roughly 200kg

Best to ask your structural engineer if there is a way to support this in timber rather than steel. They can do the calcs for you.

Ask them too how much the door would need to reduce to create sufficient brickwork to rest on, and if there are any other options. If its just a case of reducing the width to each side by about 150mm of brickwork and that saves you the whole steel across the top of the back wall then potentially that would be a compromise that's worth doing to protect your budget.

Only you can decide what compromises are worth making. The only person able to check the calcs and put forward an alternative are your structural engineer along with your architect. They should be coordinating the design between them and explaining your options so that you can make an informed decision. If they're not able to do that then change them. If you're working with professionals and still find yourself seeking the advice of strangers on the internet then they are not doing their job well enough and you don't have to stick with them.

We needed a goalpost steel too just made costs ridiculous TBF steel footings too, so we scrapped that & had the alternative.

I have built-in closets under the eaves of an American Bungalow style house in three bedrooms. They measure about 6'x 4', and my son even has a bed in one that is slightly larger, but the ceiling height is between about 2 1/2 and just barely 5 feet, so they aren't as efficient as they can be. In the master, I moved the rod to the back wall (it used to be only the depth of a hanger from the door) and down to a height to hang shirts and jackets, a little over 3' up, and this freed up the two existing short rods on the sides that are set about 4 plus feet up from the floor--long enough for most dresses, skirts and suits and such. This sort of U shaped arrangement works pretty well and the corners are for boxed out of season clothes and a short revolving (sort of a wire Lazy Susan) shoe rack.

There are kitchen companies that can replace the doors, plinths and end panels etc thus completely changing the colour of your kitchen but using existing units. One I know if is Dream doors which my neighbour used to go from dark wood to cream and I cannot tell they are the old units. I like your kitchen, the layout seems good. I feel whats making it feel a bit dated is the amount of orangey pine or similar wood. Even changing the door knobs would help. If you wanted a greater change, a handleless slab kitchen in either a matching cream as the aga, or a grey might work? As an aside, changing the colour of the floor might help too.

Hi ... As you see on my profile picture, the front door is very much at the office, the only way to reach the house is via the main driveway to the black door. It's because the driveway is so long, the house is behind another house, and currently we dont have our "own" boundaries at the side of the driveway at the main road to post a sign on that some have an issue finding us....we will get to rectifying that. Even if we did allow access via the path to the utility room (which we dont want to do), that path also doesnt reach the main road either, and looks like an entrance to the new telephone exchange next door with identical gate to theirs (we are the "old" exchange). The main door was the utility but now I changed things and put the new entrance in, it's very obvious that going further than the office front door is private. Trust me... bloke with a sledge hammer has happened here already, several men 2200Watt demolition hammers... this place doesnt wan't to budge! I agree on the macerator, but it's the only way, I have however taken heed and re-planned to to only need one, not crazy 3. None of the internal walls are structural so to speak... apart from holding up the ceiling, which I add that is not sufficient as an upstairs floor using beams that should have been bigger than there is. The house is adapting through stages of also being able to live in it. While we tear down one part of the house, 2 bedrooms needed to be in service, the one bathroom retained, and the kitchen/laundry are going nowhere. Currenty the newly "finished" rooms are the Office, kitchen, Laundry, Bedrooms 2 & 3, the hallway(stairwell) shaped up and about to cut the bathroom door, the in floor electrics are in the living room, 65" wall mounted tv. Basically, we are working from one end to the other whilst keeping it liveable. Upstairs is future /maybe at this point. To be brutally honest, I dont think the architect has given it a thought, and in the latest plan actually removed a steel truss to make rooms look like will work, odd cupboards at the extremes, diagonal steel truss through bathroom, no thought to head height or where the plumbing services are. I'm sending a plan back with everything stripped out of the loft bar the master bedroom because of this... What I want to know, is how we are going to construct the floor and ventilate the loft etc... I cant say I'm enjoying it anyway, and I thought it was going to be and exciting move for the money :(

OnePlan Can I please ask, the service you provide, if you are not architects, do you work WITH an architect or would i then need to speak to an architect as well? A bit confused as where I come from (Greece), it would be an architect that I would talk to initially, who would provide a couple of concepts as to what it would look like structurally, for me to decide. Once I chose the concept I like, the architect would draw the plans and either I or them would submit the planning application. They would then talk to a structural engineer to come and have a look at walls and decide what support will be needed and where). At the same time once I had the new floor plans in hand, I would take them to a kitchen company to decide on the new layout for units; their input would then influence building (e.g. where to have access points for gas/ electric). I don't have an endless budget to throw towards professional services, and I am baffled as to WHO can draw up plans for the builders to use: an architect or an interior designer?

Ask if the design can be site with flitch beam instead. It is a steel plate sandwiched with timber to form a bean. It will reduce the amount of steel . The goal post will be needed across the back regardless .

Have you considered building in ICF system, that may remove the need for the goal past over the doors at front and just leave you with the roof steel works for lantern?
