HELP.. (pls) layout for awkward shaped room

Hi
I am desperately looking for some design advice from those who are in the know!
I am decorating a top floor largish room with sloped room
The room with be a teenage hangover so small sofa bed and tv are the two musts
Can anyone help with the layout, ideas etc
I’m really stumped with what to do with this room so any guidance would be great

Comments (8)Hello Heidi, Firstly it's a great room and lots of potential here. You could paint the feature wall with the fireplace a slightly darker shade of something that compliments the sofas.. In this way you instantly create a focus for the room and the fireplace does just that. I'd like to suggest that you place the sofa in line with the fireplace. Then 1 armchair I would angle to the left of the fireplace if you're looking at it. The book case is a reach away when wanting to read but I'd turn it round to frame the doors.. It might be a nice idea to actually move the other bookcase over to place on the other side... ie where the chest of drawers is.. So they both frame the doors... Paint the mirror frame and hang this... Keep some space free on the mantle as this gives the fire room to become a bit more expansive... Why not place the chest of drawers to the left of the fireplace behind the armchair... You can house toys and things here. It's both elegant and a good way to frame the fireplace as you don't have a chimney breast.. On the other find a low side table or a low cabinet.. You could house the television on this pretty much as it is currently.. Keep drinks in the cabinet or something, so they have functions and multiple uses.. Differing heights adds to interest here and it could be good to hang that 1 picture on the rear of the sofa wall with the others... Then there is a bit of room for the little one's to play as you can place the little white table and chairs near the window where it's warm with the rad. Find a nice lampshade for the central light and then place the table lamp close to the sofa.. possibly one with the armchair.. So you have pools of light in different areas and the room is ambient. You may find you do without the central light all together.. So really the key here is that I don't think you need to buy anything else and indeed I feel it would spoil the flow to add more seating.... Scatter the cushions so they are fewer, one or two at 1 end and 1 or two on the armchair.... maybe make a seating pile for the little ones with any left over.. : ))...See MoreNeed help for my small living/dining room with awkward layout
Comments (10)Hi. It's hard to tell if this will work as I can't tell the door width but what if you were to build a ŵall to wall bookcase on the desk ŵall incorporating both the tv and radiator? Ignore the design of this one, was just showing a pic of one against a window, You may need to widen the pillar by the dining room entrance slightly. Perhaps ammonite by F&B for the ŵalls with a floor that picks up one of the tones in the table. I'd also paint the coving in the ammonite and a darker shade of grey for the bookcase. Have a 6ft sofa (allowing for side table and lamp) opposite the bookcase (not against the ŵall) with a chair angled in front of the bookcase and perhaps go for an upholstered stool on legs as per your inspiration pic. You could use Romans on the windows, maybe in a vertical stripe and then use geo patterns for the cushions. Re lights I'd add ŵall lights to the bookcase and a flush for the living room, preferably just 7 inches high. You can afford to hang something lower over the dining table. Comments (1)Hi Vicki, Would there be any way you could change the mechanism of the kitchen/hallway/bathroom doors, so they are sliding doors rather than doors that open into the room? I've found this to be a good solution when you're tight on space, though you mentioned you may not be there for long so perhaps this would be too great an investment! I think installing shelving in the recesses around the fireplace would be great - I love this look in a living room. Also regarding the TV above the fireplace - you could get an extending wall bracket so that the length and angle of the TV can be adjusted, in addition to it being able to lie flat against the wall if you wish. Comments (8)So... here goes: I've used the dimensions of the Ikea Klippan sofa, so something around that size should be okay. Also put in an Ikea armchair, and I'm thinking that you could incorporate the TV into the bookcases. Perhaps you could create a bench in the niche where the patio doors are, with a small dining table and a chair. I've seen people using Ikea (I'm not working for them, I promise) Kallax shelving units to create dining benches. If it's really 1.19 m, it would fit exactly (fingers crossed). Anyway, good tip is to make a paper version of furniture you've seen, using (news)paper and sticky tape and put it on the floor in the room to see how much floor space it will take up....See Morechloeloves
