Sofabed alternative

Hi,

we have a spare second bedroom where we put our music instruments and table, monitor computers. This is a room for guests as well. However hopefully we'd like to have it as the baby's room in the future. I am in a dilemma of buying a sofa bed or an alternative for guests (especially parents coming to visit us for a few weeks). What would you recommend to put in a small room that can be used as baby's room in the future? Happy to hear from your experiences as I don't want to buy something that we can not use in the future.

What about an Ikea hemnes day bed? Can be used as a single or extended to a double for guests. Good storage drawers too. My daughter loves the mid sleepr height (had from age 3).

a sofa bed sound like it makes the most sence given that the parents will be staying but a few other ideas (most of which you have probably already thought of or are maybe out of the question) are: a day bed with a trundle, a futon based convertable price of furniture (the rage in futons is surprisingly large), inflatable mattress, a hammock (a bit on the unusual side but if you get an easy to construct mount you can just fold it away), a camp bed, or maybe embrace the great outdoors even more with just a sleeping bag! Apologies, I kid. I can't think of any other options aside from the above. Good luck with your sleeping arrangements and future family addition.

How about painting the radiator and the wall it is on blackboard paint, having a gallery including your piece of graffiti art (I like it) on the wall on which the door is on. You can have a couch there or a daybed, whatever you want. Keep all the walls white except the one with blackboard, leave your curtains as black white and grey and paint your floor glossy white. Put a modern light as your main light. By having all these items in black whites and grey it means that it can change to another room at a later date easily. Have the wall shelves as you had them in your design, go for a white desk and have an orange chair. Have an extra large rug that has some black or grey. For the bookcase I suggest some closed in cupboards for items you don't want to see and some open shelves for items that can look pretty. Thanks for the mentions peeps ! Just popped in while I'm stopping work for a quick coffee ! Re seamless worksurface - lots of composites do very well concealed joints ! But you can also use changes in height or adding a chopping block or marble pastry rolling area into long runs to hide the fact you needed to make a join . Hi Jen, Yeah I also like Minnie's ideas. However, if I understand correctly...the idea to make the new dining a lounge would be a little small for us. Also to make the current lounge a bedroom for guests means they would need to access the main house and use our main house kitchen, which is not really ideal for us as we want a separate external access(without putting an extra door on our front facade which would look strange). I think in terms of resale (in future) I would probably dress the studio/annexe as the lounge and the main house lounge as a bedroom. I think keeping the rooms separate may give more flexibility in future and then if future buyers wanted to knock through study and dining it would be possible. I understand open plan living appeals to many at the moment, but for our family it doesn't work, especially when on occasions working from home. The "hidden kitchenette" will be placed in the narrowest part of the studio (which is approx 2.2m) and the living / sleeping space would be in the wider section (see attachment). Having a Murphy or sofabed is not ideal but we don't have space to create a bedroom in that space.

Thanks Nick, I've added the current floor plan and some more info re our plans. We're hoping to add a WC porch at the front (unsure yet on planning) Re option 1 and the closet... we could incorporate that into bedroom 3 (as one neighbor has done) but, I'm my preference, having that as storage space is useful. Yes both bedrooms are small and would primarily be as a nursery/office... Option 1 works really well as a nursery or guest bedroom but option 2 would work better as a third bedroom as you do get space for a 'permanent single bed' and wardrobe opposed to a day bed or sofabed. We had plans drawn up for a en suite in Bedroom 1 but alot of the builders didn't give us much hope due to pipes and joists ect... so we've opted to explore a small porch extension with room for a cloak room toilet. The area is really mixed, from sudents to first time buyers and younger families. The estate agents we've spoken to believe the market for our house is first time/younger families. That being said, its a really popular and an expensive area but due to it being ex council, the price range for this property, you'd only be able to get a 2 bed flat on neighboring roads... so could appeal to smaller families who don't want to leave the area. The reasons we're planning on doing the work is to 1. give us a few more years in this house and 2. the return on investment... we'd easily make 1.5x the amount spent doing the work ( based on todays market) Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Hello Esin, have you ever considered to invest into bed-to wall system? Such unit system gives you necessary storage and bed opens when you need it.

There are many possible options with desk, wardrobe, closed storage etc. the same applies to bed size and type of bed opening. Choice is yours!

We got rid of a sofa bed in our kids playroom as it was taking up too much space and now use two of the muji foldaway guest mattresses. http://www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?Sec=19&Sub=122&PID=782

We've had no complaints from guests so far in terms of comfort and they hold together well with a double sheet when both used.

Hi there,

Sofa beds are always great as you can use them in the future anywhere in the house. We have a selection of gorgeous sofa beds that you may be interested to look at. They are perfect as you can keep a sofa bed in the room in the future if you do change the room into a baby's room, meaning you will have somewhere to sit whilst looking over the crib!
