We have the same type of panelling in our hall and it was oak the same as yours with an oak floor. It just started to feel quite dark and drab but we hesitated to to do anything for fear of messing it up. In the end we painted all the panelling in Farrows French grey, left the doors and floors wood and painted the sides of our staircase and the spindles in Farrows clunch but left the newel posts and the bannister rail as wood - looks like a different hallway - I have never regretted painting it

Without knowing the dimension of your room it's hard but I would suggest the following: Colours: keep it neutral, try not to choose colours within the yellow spectrum. Although you would think it would make it feel 'warm' they also have a tendency to make it feel quite dark. The room is too small to do anything majorly bold with your walls. I would be tempted to choose a slightly off white colour and use your pictures and a big colourful rug to bring colour into the room. Orientation: put your TV in the wall above the fireplace. Your sofa under the stairs and get two smaller occasional chairs on the wall the sofa is currently on. Also put your large mirror on this wall. The armchair you have could go where the TV is and be used with the standing lamp as a little reading chair. Windows: slated wooden blinds in brilliant white would look great. Lights: change the green to match the chandelier light, the rooms not big enough for two different lamp shades. Or at the very least a different chandelier? You need small tables with lamps on dotted around. Your pictures are hung a little too high to the ceiling. You might want to try grouping them together a bit more. This is just what I would do, but It's a pretty little room, it'll look nice whatever you do.

Thanks everyone, this is so helpful!!! Dundrum that made me chuckle. I will stick to my guns but sadly the retailers have an aversion to pistachio. Went round huge Next home store today, tonnes of curtain fabric options in all colours except pistachio!!! Grrrr! Thank you again Man about House, I will persevere and I covet your curtains!!! I think I may well get the original rug you found! Thanks Laura will also look at French Connection, who would have thought! The parquet floors are from 1962 and I am chuffed to bits how they have come up, waited 3.5 years to do them! Angie and celery girl, very good points re rug size, my last Ikea one was definitely in the "not this" category!! Thanks also for the image celerygirl, I like the poufs very much but the trouble is the room is Lshaped and the walkway goes past them Any views on the coffee table dilemma everyone? As for brown sofa wish could replace asap. Would you believe someone gave me a beautiful South African wood sideboard and I kept it for a few years until eBaying it for a pittance! I even tried it in the space, see pic, yikes, I thought it was too dominant but maybe not....!

Ikea Kitchens are excellent, the attention to quality is superb. Lots of suppliers only offer doors in particular sizes, which is why when you go to an appointment at Wickes for example and you then take it to Howdens, they often have to swap the cabinets around as they don't all do all the sizes. Factoring in that you may want to change the doors in a few years at this point is in my opinion daft. You buy a kitchen and it should last 10-15 years. Magnet and Howdens offer great kitchens too. However, I have personal experience of fitting an Ikea Kitchen last year and was very impressed. I've used Howdens several times too. There are many companies however, that offer custom sizes when ordering replacements such as Kitchen door workshop and Kitchen Door Outlet to name but two. Saying that you can't replace the doors, just simply isn't accurate.
