What style of door should I fit?

We have just changed the windows to basalt grey aluminium and now looking to change the front door. I have ordered some door furniture (door knocker, round knob handle with matching key hole, letter box) in rustic bronze which should look good with the paint colour (to be matching ral colour 7012 Basalt Grey) but I am unsure which style of timber door to order. Any ideas? Is this one good in that glazed squares at the top tie in with windows or is this too many squares? I do want a door that can house a letter box and door knocker. All opinions appreciated! Thanks

What a lovely looking cottage! I think that door should be fine but I also love the look of cottage style doors with the tongue and groove effect and a central window, perhaps split into 4 panes. Personally I’d go for a brighter colour on the door like a rich teal, blue or soft green to make it stand out and look more cottagey (if that’s a word). Whichever you choose I’m sure it’ll look great:) Here are some ideas.

I perhaps should have said, cottage is 1750 in oldest part, most is c.100 yrs old and there is a modern extension and garage conversion to the rear. Inside is v Farrow and Ball painted wood, inglebook fireplace then through to modern kitchen. A real mix of classic/traditional with modern elements at the front which turns more modern as you continue through the house. Here is the rest of the door furniture I ordered.

What a great decision to have to make, I wish I lived on a colourful street. Lucky you. I like either the salmon pink of the first photo or the palest pink of the second photo. I’d stick to white for the door. Keep us updated with what you decide, I don’t think you can go wrong with most colours but I wouldn’t want to be the boring one in the row

I have to say, I'm leaning towards option 1. As I may have mentioned in the past, I suspect the trend for grey and anthracite windows/doors/sofitts etc will end sooner or later and what folks will find is they're left with external features that date a house but would be expensive to fix. And whilst I like the look of the grey now, I also remember liking the dark wood windows in the late 80s at the time, but now think they date a property. :-/ (sorry to offend anyone who may have them).

I notice I posted this in September and said I am about to redecorate. Well... it's now March and ai have made a start! Well nearly finished actually. decided to embrace the dresser unit thing coz I had no choice.... hubby was not removing it. I have got new handles etc. I had ordered a new carpet to be fitted next week but I've cancelled it due to all the uncertainty and have made the room up... just in case we need it for self isolation. I'm pleased thus far apart from the vile clashing carpet.

I would paint them! If you have a look at our Kitchen Refurbishment project on our page, it's exactly what we did. We replaced the hinges and knobs on an old pine kitchen with polished chrome and painted the cabinets. The client cried when she saw it finished, she was so pleased, and her friends and family thought she'd had a new kitchen!

Thanks Rachel, funnily enough you picked out 2 pics I saved to my ideas book. The 1st is what I started with as I love the solid tongue and groove doors but I'm a little worried about how dark it will make the hallway. This was also the pic that made me think of matching my door and windows funnily enough. The next pic is this door I chose, painted in my window colour and with clear glazing, which I want too. Maybe I will risk the dark and go for the tongue and groove, just with panel through the middle so I can add the mail box? Its a lovely look for sure. Thanks for taking the time to look at these for me, I really appreciate your opinion.

Man About The House. Thanks for these door suggestions. Im struggling a little to get mail box and knocker into all of these and privacy but do like the light elements and more traditional look. Do you think if the door Im considering (pictured) was with clear glass, that would make all the difference in terms of modern/traditional fit? It's a traditional design, but maybe more town than cottage? Thanks so much for taking time to look into these and share them with me, it always amazes me that people take time out of their own busy lives to help others on Houzz.

I agree with others, the door you picked is not quite right.

To me its panelling looks Georgian in style, not really in keeping with your house.

Some nice suggestions here already.

Although it's probably tricky to determine which period style your door should be, since the building has no one specific era I think a little more research n door styles and periods is needed.

Generally i feel a door should either have the appropriate period style or a real modern one, which may not look great, in your case.

Did you buy the letterbox, knob and knocker? I think you'll find it difficult to place all of them on any door. I would say that most people have a letterbox, key escutcheon and then a knocker not the knob too. Or, the letterbox, which has the knocker attached to it, a knob and an escutcheon. So, in essence three things not four.

Personally I would have the knob on an old cottage and a doorbell , not the knocker, either way, not both.

You could move the escutcheon down to halfway between the knob and letterbox, to the left then have the knocker over that.

Thanks, I see what you mean Manaboutthehouse. the door knob is a handle, rather than a pull knob, so I had sort of considered knob and escuchion (sp?) to make one, same as if the keyhole was within the plate of a door handle. Also I took advice from the tip above (thank you!) about researching door styles and they do mostly bring me back to the 6 panel, give or take glazing variations. Ive been looking at doors around the villages today and most cottages have this 6 panel Georgian style or the 4 panel Victorian. I will post on here with a pic of the finished product. Thanks so much everyone for your help.
