How to combine an office/living room space?

We've been in our house for about 11 months, but still don't quite know how to tackle this room.

we pretty much live at the back of the house, so I'm currently using it as a home office, with a desk and screens tucked into one of the corners. Bit it seems like such a waste for a big room.

We've since put some blinds up, and despite the bright photo, it loses the sunlight after midday and becomes quite a dark room.

Thinking of embracing the dark and making it a cosy living space, with similar colour schemes to the photo below. But I'm not sure how to combine a home office with this.

Has anyone had a similar issue? - would be great to see some other peoples solutions.

Also thinking one of the 2 doors into the room could be boarded up (see floorplan)

Hi. you could incorporate a desk within a bookcase? It would go with the style of your inspiration photo

Was going to suggest the same.
We have the Moormann fnp with the „Sekretär“. I am right now WFH, sitting at that desk in our livingroom... I love it.
The pictures are from their website an come in different sizes/colors.

Sounds like you have an architect involved - these are all questions that any architect worth their salt can answer for you. ;) South facing glazing is more likely to cause you problems with overheating rather than heat loss, especially during the summer. If you have a lot of south facing glazing then you may need to counterbalance this with some shading. Incorporating a thermal heat sink may also help. It's possible to have clean minimal lines and still create a warm homely feel - look at timber finishes, paint colours, etc as well as soft furnishings. Wood burning stoves are excellent - modern ones can be highly efficient ways to heat your space and look great as focal points in a room. Speak to your architect about these concerns/queries and if they're not able to answer or you're not convinced by their answer check that they are really architects - must be registered with the architects registration board - as all of these are simple questions that a good architect will be able to respond to for you. Have you considered fitting a bi/fold or sliding door or rehanging it to open into the hallway? That would resolve one end of the room. At the other I would fit a length of nice worktop across the full width and have a slot cut out at the back to allow the heat from the radiator to rise. It would also be useful for losing the wire mess from TV's and computers. Adding a small storage unit under the worktop would keep the room tidy. Putting in a sofa bed would make this a great and functioning TV/Office and occasional guest room.

It's a lovely room. Are you buying new furniture or trying to make your existing furniture work because an L shaped sofa might work well in the space and allow for two separate zones. Also, how many people do you need seating for? Can you get away with a small dining table for every day that extends for visitors?

Hi Tas! If it was me then I wouldn't continue the kitchen back along that wall and instead create more of a galley kitchen with an island facing towards the back and a bank of full height units against the wall. This would make the rest of the room more useable by keeping the kitchen more compact and with as much storage as you need. In open plan spaces like that I find that one of the things that people find most difficult is deciding where to put the TV! I've had a lot of people come to me after they've had that kind of open plan design, but it doesn't really work for what they want to use it for. You obviously don't want it to look just like an office, so as above incorporating a desk within other cabinetry. Depends how much needs to be an office to how much open shelving to closed units you would require. Either way this can all be made to suit the style of your living room.

Thanks for the ideas. trying to get the most out of the space i guess, so incorporating the desk works well I think. but tend to have a laptop + another screen and keyboard. my partners a teacher, so needs some space for marking etc. Would like to be able to use the space for relaxing in as well if posible.

Hi Dave, If you can have it made, then it's very easy to incorporate what you want. Two desks or one longer to accommodate two - doors to cover the desk area to hide permanent office equipment or not ... etc etc etc. It will need to be very personal to you and how you like to set up a desk area. You can then work around the other details to make it work within you living room.

Buying pre-made furniture for this might be quite difficult, though to incorporate it into your living space, fit nicely, look good and to use practically might be more tricky.
