Full Restoration of Art Deco Oak and Walnut Floor | W2 Hyde Park Square

Exceptional oak and walnut art-deco floor
Set across four floors, this elegant house located close to Hyde Park was refurbished throughout to a classic art-deco style and to an exceptional standard. On the ground floor is a stunning reception room with high ceilings and to the rear is a high end fully fitted kitchen with dining space and the bi-folding doors overlook a lovely patio space. The high end art deco floor, fitted throughout the ground floor, has long narrow solid oak strips and a bold dark walnut border.

Full restoration required
This complete restoration project involved replacing damaged planks with matching planks, expert sanding and refinishing the ground floor. Since the installation 20 years ago, there hasn’t been any maintenance, just regular and occasionally abrasive cleaning. Over the years a few cleaning mistakes meant that the floor was deeply stained and these stains couldn’t be removed by normal sanding. We considered replacing the damaged boards but as the floor was bespoke and not factory made we knew we were unlikely to find the same product to replace it with. For bespoke floors we always recommend customers keep back a spare pack of wood for future maintenance. However in this case, we were able to custom make new boards to match the length, width and thickness of the existing floor.

The benefits of dust-free sanding
The customer’s well designed home was full of expensive artwork, paintings and statues worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. The customer arranged for most pieces to be removed but some remained and had to be well protected from dust and damage. Although it can be messy work, sanding is the bedrock for a proper finish. If you skip or rush this essential stage and rush you can forget about a nice, quality finish. Our collection of dust-free Laegler sanding equipment was ideal for this project as the sanders collect the dust as it is produced.

Osmo polyx oil clear satin for a lasting quality finish
We applied two coats of osmo polyx oil clear satin for a lasting quality finish. When our customers returned to the UK they were very happy with the quality of the restored floor and were delighted to see the original striking colours were back.
