Natural-Grade Random-Width Flooring Installation | Russell Square WC1

This project focused on the installation of natural grade, random width oak floorboards in a prestigious mansion block located in the heart of Russell Square. The unique mix of widths and natural characteristics of the wood added a timeless elegance to the space, perfectly complementing the building’s classic charm.

Our international customers enjoy living in their bright and elegant third-floor flat, featuring high ceilings, grand proportions, and timeless style. Located in the heart of Russell Square, this substantial purpose-built mansion block offers a stunning setting with expansive views of central London. An unfortunate leak sped up their plans for a renovation and they were keen to repair the floor with a quality lasting new floor.

A leak from a downpipe within the wall caused significant water damage to both the floor and wall, requiring urgent repairs. To properly restore the space, our clients moved out temporarily to allow the damaged flooring to be properly replaced. This renovation project not only resolved the leak issue but also provided an opportunity for a major upgrade. Beyond simply replacing the floor, we implemented structural improvements, eliminating the previous unnecessary design workarounds such as excess beading and profiles.

To maintain the integrity of the original 1930s design, we carefully undercut the skirting boards, preserving their timeless charm. We also installed an impact sound reduction membrane, which was glued down and reinforced with an 80kg steel roller compression. This technique ensures a strong adhesive bond, enhancing the stability and soundproofing of the floor for a superior finish.

This project featured a natural grade floor, showcasing the unique character of wood with its knots, shades, and curly grain—telling the story of the tree itself. The floor was laid using random, mixed-width boards, as logs are naturally cut, creating an authentic and organic appearance. The long hallway benefited from boards that appeared continuous, thanks to our expert craftsmanship and precise joining. With no bevels on the short edges, the design achieved a seamless, long-board effect that is highly sought after.

Using accurate laser measurements, we established the ideal starting line to keep the floor aligned and perfectly straight throughout the space. A significant amount of impact sound reduction membrane was required and the project was located on the 3rd floor with no lift. This added to the complexity of the project, but with a bit of extra team effort, we were able to complete the installation on time and to the highest standard. Our customers were delighted with the end result.
