Random Width Oak Boards and Restored Herringbone Parquet | Herne Hill SE24
Rich, warm ebony coloured oak flooring was selected for this project. Generously proportioned random width boards were chosen, creating a bold and refined aesthetic throughout the home. The installation spanned the ground floor, including a double living room and expansive entrance hallway, as well as the two upper floors. To ensure a smooth and efficient process, the project was carefully divided into two manageable stages. Particular emphasis was placed on precise setting out and accurate alignment, ensuring a cohesive flow and a consistently high standard of presentation across all areas of the property.
Stage one of the project involved preparing the subfloor, including careful levelling and the installation of acoustic insulation. The existing floorboards had undergone multiple rounds of sanding and were no longer structurally sound. The rooms were noticeably inclined and that required careful correction to achieve a level surface and maximum room height. The selected random width oak boards featured a traditional profile with a natural grain, chosen to complement and preserve the character of the home. The project incorporated a random width layout, using a considered mix of three different widths of oak boards (20x180mm, 20x210mm and 20x160mm) contributing to a more natural and characterful finish. A bespoke colour finish was applied, carefully tailored to suit the property’s period features and overall traditional aesthetic.
Stage two focused on the lower ground floor, where the kitchen featured a reclaimed herringbone parquet in Jatoba wood. Sections of the existing parquet floor had been poorly installed, resulting in loose blocks. These areas were carefully lifted and securely re-fixed, followed by a thorough deep clean to restore the overall appearance of the floor. The kitchen entrance steps were deep cleaned and refinished to complement the surrounding finishes. The wooden worktop was also revitalised through careful sanding and oiling, while the kitchen entrance steps were deep cleaned and refinished to complement the surrounding surfaces. The clients were very happy with the end result.
