Modern Family Garden, Hale, Cheshire by Barnes Walker Ltd, Manchester

The full garden design undertaken by Barnes Walker included a new front garden, driveway and entrance as well as an extensive rear garden makeover.

The client had three main wishes for the rear garden; a play space for their two kids, an outdoor cooking / seating area and that the whole garden could be used to entertain large groups of friends and family.

The symmetrical architecture of the house is such that we could use it divide the garden into two distinct zones –kids (play space) and an adult (entertaining space). We then used the cooking and formal seating area (family space) along with a commonality of materials, tree species and architectural features to link the two.

The play space takes up the larger proportion of garden and consists of a large area of astro turf and a bespoke double height play house, with storage for toys and bean bags underneath, a climbing wall, a fireman’s pole and WiFi connection!

The adult zone, consists of a large south facing raised patio surrounded by L-shape metal posts with wire trellis supporting flowering climbers and a sculptural hand-beaten copper seat which moves slowing in the wind, hanging on the edge acting as focal point from anywhere within the garden.

Four pairs of roof-top parasol trees march away from the house and additional L shape posts and climbers frame the outdoor kitchen and formal seating area which is centred on the house and primary doors out with a water feature providing the back stop to the vista.

Thin metal fins and planting act as a divide whilst allowing the two zones to feel visually connected- ensuring the kids are still well within sight of parents.

The high-tech garden also has a full surround sound speaker system installed and discrete lighting.
