Small Courtyard in the Suburbs by Barnes Walker Landscape Architects, Manchester
This garden lies within a new-build development, also designed by Barnes Walker.
The compact garden required screening solutions and pleached trees were perfect for this scenario as they take up so little space.
The hardworks and softwworks have both been very carefully designed and implemented by the Barnes Walker team. One of the main design features in this garden is the use of reclaimed Yorkstone. The flags have been used in the standard way but additional flags have been 'cropped' and laid to form trims and frames. Some have been mortared others have the mortar set low and gravel brushed into the joints. This is an extreme use of a salvaged material leading no product to go to waste. Loose gravel for the driveway is permeable and allows water to reach the tree roots.
Cottage style planting with a purple, white and green colour theme ties the whole scheme together.
At the centre of the back garden is a deck which flips standard decking on it's head. The deck boards have been laid on their sides producing a mid-century type effect. The amorphous deck creates an angled bench to recline against, the central space can be used for a BBQ or fire pit. A great place to socialise with friends and family,
