We designed an addition when these folks had twins 25 years ago, and recently we went back and made a new kitchen for the empty-nesters! Removing a hallway added additional space in the kitchen and created an open floor plan and functionality including; a door to the outside patio, connected the kitchen to the laundry room, and the additional space also allowed room for a pantry.
