We converted this 200 square foot, one-car garage in Santa Barbara’s Mesa neighborhood to an Accessory Dwelling Unit in 2020. We had to insulate the walls and roof and provide heat and a bathroom and kitchen, but we did not change the size or shape of the small building. We did add French doors and windows, a closet and a fold-down bed. The owners operate it as a vacation rental (legal in the coastal zone) and are pleasantly surprised at the income they are deriving from this charming space and its adjacent yard and spa.
