Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara, Spanish Colonial, Addition and Major Remodel

This couple made some dramatic changes to this Hope Ranch home.

The wife had grown up in Santa Barbara but made her career, met her husband, and started her family in the Bay Area. She always wanted to return to her childhood town, and when her three girls were the right age and she and her husband created new work arrangements, they bought a 1970s version of a Spanish house in Hope Ranch.

The architects and interior designer wanted to refresh the house and revive the Spanish theme, as well as adding new spaces at the owners’ request. They remodeled all the rooms and added a dramatic new master bedroom suite with a large upper-floor deck in the place of two smaller bedrooms. The master bath opens into a tiled, vaulted-ceiling open shower and tub room with ocean views. The master suite, with reading area and office, is accessed by a beautiful flowing set of tiled stairs.

The architects also opened a dark family room at pool level to a new outdoor kitchen and dining area. Now the family flows easily from kitchen to play room, then to the outdoor dining area and to the pool. The husband loves cooking in his new outdoor kitchen!
