Riviera, Santa Barbara, Outdoor Shower

Located on a steeply sloping hillside in the scenic foothills of Mission Canyon this 80 SF outdoor shower enclosure is designed to provide privacy while enhancing the pleasure of bathing through a connection to nature - including stunning views of the ocean and islands beyond.

The simple volume is defined on three sides by a steel frame through which natural wood slats are woven in gentle curves reminiscent of undulating ocean waves. The wood slats allow light and air to penetrate the space while offering sufficient enclosure to envelop the bather in steam and protect them from cool breezes. The wood slat system also supports the growth of plants - further immersing the structure into the lushly vegetated hillside.

Side walls are detailed to float several inches above the floor. In addition to protecting them from standing water, the enclosure appears to hover mid-air. At night, a halo of light from LED strip lighting at the base of the walls enhances the sense of lightness while providing sufficient light for safety without hindering views of the starry night sky.

A grid of stainless steel rods sits delicately at the top of the enclosure to support hanging plants and growing vines. A square hole is left open at the center of the grid to maintain views of the sky.

Materials were selected both for their durability and to enhance a sensory rich experience. The weathering steel frame has a warm patina that blends into the warmth of the natural IPE wood used on the floor and walls.
