Ventura, CA, New Home, Contemporary
The owners of this Ventura, CA, foothill home turned tragedy into opportunity when they lost their home of 20 years in the 2017-2018 Thomas Fire. They loved the site, at the end of a street and with undeveloped hills in their back yard, and wanted to rebuild with a more functional design, taking more advantage of spectacular views. Thompson Naylor Architects helped them achieve their goals, including capturing ocean views from a south-facing deck with movable shade covering and from a large roof deck complete with outdoor fireplace, barbecue, sink, and dumbwaiter to the kitchen. The architects located the garage below the 1-story house, and a residential elevator from garage to house was included to allow them to stay in the house as they age.
