A Playful Shaker Kitchen

The Design Brief
When we met Jo and Dave, early in 2014, it was clear from the start that this was going to be a challenging project! We needed to incorporate a lot into a small space including creating more worktop space, an easier work flow and more storage than they previously had. Driven by Jo’s love for arts and crafts and influences from France, Italy and Sweden the design evolved intimately and took on the character of the family.

The Build
When Jo handed me a hand drawn sketch entitled the “bonkers dresser cabinet” that she had conceived in a moment of clarity (or madness depending on your view), the most challenging aspect of the build process was born. This cabinet has sliding doors in the lower section running smoothly on waxed oak, and randomly positioned panel doors and little drawers in the upper section built from different reclaimed British hardwoods. With Oak carcass and painted Oak frame to tie the dresser in with the rest of the kitchen, the effect is stunning.

Materials
We used FSC Birch and Oak plywood for the carcasses, PEFC sustainable Oak for all the frames, doors and worktops and reclaimed, recycled and saved timbers for the small spice drawers and the doors on the “bonkers” dresser cabinet; these included Yew, Ash, Elm and Walnut.
