Banquette Dining Area Maida Vale: Designed and Constructed by The Garden Builder

This large project set in Hampstead Garden Suburb included both the front and rear garden areas. All of the garden areas required stripping back to basics in order to incorporate the new, extensive garden design.

The rear garden comprises a main terrace area built over the basement of the house. This terrace is formed on a concrete pad due to the excavations carried out to the structure of the property under. The levels of the garden area were very carefully considered in order to enable open plan access through the house out to the terrace area and onwards to the large lawn area.

Minster stone, being a man-made material that replicates Portland stone was used within the scheme. This stone allows for the look of Portland stone but without the many problems that can occur with the natural product. A unique slot-drain drainage system was built into the terrace to discretely dislodge rain water into the drain provided. A real lawn was laid onto a carefully constructed sub-base consisting of multi-layers of free draining materials suitable for a domestic, ornamental lawn. The lawn was edged with matching random sized thin-stone pieces. The garden boundaries were formed with mid-sized mature yew hedging combined with pre-planted panels of instant live ivy hedging. Sitting within the planting borders is a mixture of formal, shade tolerant plants combined with blocks of birch trees to give additional height to the scheme. The client commissioned a bespoke glass house for the garden and this was positioned nearby a kitchen garden area comprising several vegetable planting beds, with borders created from matching stone.

Mild steel planters with the typical rusty corten steel like finish were included within the planting scheme. The colour of these replicated the tones of the lovely growing willow feature in the garden.Existing mature trees form the boundary of the garden. To illustrate the various changes in level on the main terrace discrete LED light fittings, set within the step areas, illuminate the treads and coping stone details around the terrace. Bespoke slatted screening in a matching RAL colour to compliment the terrace was commissioned and installed.

Raised beds were required along the left hand side of the garden and these were clad with large format pieces of the matching Minster stone. A porous cedar gravel path was constructed around the vegetable garden area to aid the drainage and this method was also used for the side paths leading to the front garden area.

The front garden features an inner driveway with large feature planting areas surrounding. The planting in the area consists of box hedging, grasses and perennials, to give a seasonal, year round interest. The planting is especially suited to the Hampstead Garden Suburb surroundings.

The driveway was formed as a fully porous resin bound surface edged with basalt setts. Hunza lighting is included within the garden, along the perimeter of the driveway and set amongst all the feature plants, giving beautiful illumination and interest in the evening. The lighting scheme is all fully dimmable and controlled with the main audio visual system within the property.

Both the front and the rear gardens are fully irrigated with an above ground pump and tank system. The system is fully programmed to irrigate different zones accordingly. - See more at: http://www.gardenbuilders.co.uk/section/480/1/large-garden-hampstead#sthash.P1cjEYT1.dpuf
