Contemporary Family Garden in Barnes

The brief for this long narrow garden - 6.8 m wide x 34m long -was to carry the newly revamped contemporary interior style into the outdoor spaces, with lots of room for adult entertaining, cooking, dining, lounging, and play areas for children and their dog. Designed by Declan Buckley and built by the Garden Builders.
The clients wanted to be able to enjoy the garden in the evenings so lighting and a heat source was also part of the brief. The clients had a boxer dog that continually carried mud from the garden into the white floored interior,it was important that the new scheme would resolve this problem.The play area was to be retained for their recently born daughter but it was essential that this be safe,clean and no longer be the main focus of the garden when viewed from the house. The new design was developed to make the site seem less long and narrow. The site was divided into three distinct spaces that flow seamlessly into each other. Big blocks of planting help divide the spaces while still allowing views through the garden.
A new generous terrace close to the house used a pale stone to carry the pale floor of the interior out into the garden. A horizontal band of dark basalt stone bisects the terrace and is carried vertically up the face of the sculptural fireplace. This helps to exaggerate the width of the garden while breaking up what might otherwise appeared as a vast expanse of stone terrace.
A new lawn area was created in the centre of the garden for sunbathing.A second horizontal band of dark stone (black basalt chippings), at the end of the lawn, again helps to exaggerate the width of the garden.
A path of the same dark chippings leads from here to the third area of the garden. This is where the children's play house, swing and slide sits along with a new herb garden and ornamental planting.
High end artificial grass was used for the lawn and play area allowing the garden to be used even after heavy downpours and resolves the problems caused by the dog bringing mud throughout the house.
The garden was given a 'Highly Commended' award within the category '£30,000 - £60,000' at the prestigious 2011 APL Awards.
