The Stacked Brick Extension
The Stacked Brick Extension
YARD ArchitectsYARD Architects
The Stacked Brick Extension is a ground floor wrap around extension to a small Victorian terraced house in Stoke Newington. The original house had an odd layout, with the main bathroom on the ground floor at the back of the kitchen and no bathroom on the first floor. The ceiling height was very low on the ground floor creating a very unwelcoming kitchen and there was no connection with the garden. The extension creates a sociable open plan kitchen diner with sliding doors opening onto a new patio. We lowered the floor to create better ceiling height in the kitchen and opened up the pitched roof internally to create even more volume and define the dining space. The extension is constructed from a pale yellow brick to complement the traditional yellow stock brick of the original house, but lend a more contemporary feel. The bricks are stack bonded to create a geometric pattern. The garden and patio are all constructed form the same brickwork which helps the spaces flow together and gives a greater sense of space and continuity in the small garden. Internally a simple palette of materials includes exposed Ash rafters, Birch face plywood to form a dining room bench, dark green kitchen cabinets and grey floor tiles.

The architectural features of this space allowed for a playful combination of finishes, textures and colour. The clients wanted a strong contrast in colour and this bespoke kitchen design in our combined Classic and Urbo ranges is far from ordinary. The fresh and bright botanical green was a natural pairing with the garden and house plants and the stainless-steel worktop and rough sawn oak kitchen island balance and mirror the oak doors and beams. The shape of the room led to this elongated kitchen island that focused on food preparation and moved to breakfast seating and entertaining at the end with splay table with stylish shark nose edging.

Working in this lovely home in Letchworth which recently underwent a beautiful renovation, we see our stunning In-Frame shaker cabinets take centre stage. The brief was to create and build a modern and refreshed kitchen that would be the main attraction of the home as well as the place where the whole family could come together and create memories to last a lifetime. Each of the cabinets was hand-painted in All-White by Farrow & Ball – a white that contains no other pigment, creating the softest most sympathetic colour. This was matched with white appliances and wooden elements throughout the design. A breakfast station can encompass your entire morning and a drinks dresser for evening entertainment.
