Rustic Oak Light Smoked & Aged Herringbone in Buntingford

The Project
Mr and Mrs Hall, owners of a 20 year old barn conversion home in Standon, came to Art of Flooring looking to replace the existing half pine, half carpet floor they already had in their large entrance hallway with high ceilings. This room can also serve as a great space for entertaining (when they are allowed again they told us!). They were looking for something more durable and stylish and were redecorating whole space.

They have been in the house 4 years and are working through the rooms and it was when the windows began to leak in this hall space that they decided it was time to face this particular project and do the whole room at once, hence the time for a new floor too.

Mrs Hall had visited the David Parr house in Cambridge and noticed and liked the Herringbone wood flooring in the visitor centre there. This became the inspiration for the project, along with a Herringbone floor at the University Arms in Cambridge which she had also noticed. She found out that Art of Flooring had laid the David Parr floor and so was keen to get in touch, knowing this was definitely a look that would have impact in her large space.

Mrs Hall said “We liked the look and had seen it on a big scale, we had a big space to fill which required 60/70 square meters of wood”.

She explained that she wanted a similar look, not something 100% brand new looking, but a floor with a slightly worn effect and hoped this was something that could be recreated for her.

The buying experience
Engineered Rustic Oak Light Smoked & Tumbled Herringbone
In the Art of Flooring showroom a range of flooring options were discussed and the team explained how Mr and Mrs Hall could buy flooring blocks which had been tumbled and then smoked to 3 degrees and then would be oiled to bring out colour.

The tumbling gives it the slightly worn look that Mrs Hall was looking for and so if you have a house with pets it means any damage they cause would be unnoticeable.

The couple were able to take away floor samples, to place in different positions around the room and at different times of day as the light as it changes over the day. Mrs Hall said “it was tricky to decide and they took a leap of faith to pick the final colour”. They chose a stunning Engineered Rustic Oak Light Smoked & Tumbled Herringbone.

One big consideration had been the direction in which to lay the Herringbone and Sam took time with them at the house to work out how it would look best Mrs Hall tells us. It was the T shape of the room that made it so difficult.

Mrs Hall explained that the whole experience was “straight forward, Sam in particular spent time getting to know us to fully understand what we wanted and was a direct point of contact at all times”

The Installation
"We were an unusual case” Mrs Hall explained because her husband, in consultation with Sam laid the sub floor himself which is not something clients would normally do. He spent a lot of time over weekends “firming up joists and eliminating creaks” for the herringbone floor to be laid on and Sam came to check it was all solid before the fitters arrived.

Mrs Hall said that the fitters were very flexible, accommodating them as there were delays with the windows. It all formed part of a big project and Art of Flooring worked around the delays.

“Nigel was great, and laid the floor in about a week, it was not an easy job and you could see how experienced he was at laying, you could tell he was going to do it really well,” said Mrs Hall. The team came back for oiling after care, this was done in a day.

Mrs Hall said she had wondered about how the sound would be in the room with such a large wooden floor. The old pine was quite wide and drafty and this new floor has actually deadened the sound a bit, so now there is no echo.

To sum up
We are delighted with our new floor; Nigel was a fantastic fitter and did a brilliant job”. When asked what three words they would use to describe Art of Flooring Mrs Hall said “quality, efficient, caring”.

She has also said that if you are looking for inspiration and want to see what Art of flooring can do for you then please do come and see her floor!
